A Curly Hair Post: 90 Degrees Hairdressing Brighton

Oh it's good to be home. It's even better to be home when you know you can finally get a much needed haircut. 90 Degrees Hairdressing in Brighton was a wonderful little discovery I had made back in February when the absence of my old hairdresser had left me in a bit of a curly hair dilemma. If you have curly hair, like me, you will know the pains of going to a hairdresser who simply doesn't get curly hair so after a bit of Googling, it was to my delight that discovered 90 Degrees, highly recommended for being a curly hair specialist, no more than a 15 minute walk from the centre of Brighton

I got talking to Joseph about what needed doing- the layers needed sorting out and the ends were beginning to look a bit straggly after being dried out the Spanish sun- and then I left it in his very capable hands. Joseph cuts dry and instead of just hacking away as I've had done to me in the past, cuts individual curls, taking the time to see how the curl sits and reacts which is so important to getting lively, bouncy curly hair.
After being fluffed up and cut, my hair was washed with the most amazing smelling shampoo and conditioner. 90 Degrees specialise in organic hair care products and colour treatments so the shampoo and conditioner used on me had no nasties in them such as sulphates and parabens, a luxury I seriously missed while out in Spain as I do believe it makes a massive difference to your hair. Then, as seen above, these two lovely guys twisted and curled sections of my hair before a quick dry with a bag diffuser (literally a bag) which was certainly different to anything I'd seen before, so that they dried into these lovely curls you can see below.

.
It's amazing how quickly after a haircut you can feel the difference in your hair. It finished off drying in the Brighton sunshine as I walked down into The Laines and I could feel that my curls had sprung back to life, some of them even going into ringlets. Not to mention they smelt and felt amazing. If you're a curly girl like myself and down in the South, I couldn't recommend 90 Degrees more. It's such a relief when you find somewhere and someone who gets curly hair and it's totally worth a visit.

90 Degrees Hairdressing is on the corner of Norfolk Square and Sillwood Street
and there is currently 25% off for new clients.
Definitely worth checking out, girls!

My Curly Hair Routine

Hi!
I thought I would share with you my curly hair routine from start to finish.
I hope this helps some people, if you're struggling to control your curls.
It took years for me to figure mine out
 1. We're starting with clean freshly washed hair. I try to wash with sulphate free shampoo when I can afford to and I always let the conditioner, no matter what brand, sit in my hair while I get on with the rest of shower. Curly hair needs all the moisture it can get. Comb it through with a wide tooth comb and never brush it through when it's dry. You're just asking for damage if you do that. Pay attention to any particularly knotty areas like the back of the neck.
 2. Towel dry. Don't rub it- this only creates frizz. Collect your hair together and squeeze the water into the towel. It should still be damp at this point.
 3. I use two pumps of L'Oreal Mythic Oil. I run it through my hair but pay particular attention to my ends.
 4. Next, I apply just one pump of Tigi Bed Head  Foxy Curly Contour Creme. This is one of my HG curly hair products and I can't be without it. It smells very sweet but crucially, does not dry sticky. No one likes crunchy curls, am I right?!
5. Now SCRUNCH. Scrunch scrunch scrunch. Flip your hair over and start with the end, scrunching them in towards your skull. This more or less sets your curl pattern for the day. The creme acts as a restraint for all those fly aways and keeps them contained to the curl.
6. I then flip my hair back over and give it another spritz with Tigi Bed Head Foxy Curls Spray, particularly on the front sections of my hair.
 7. Et Voila! I find my slightly off center parting, give it a once over scrunch and leave it to air dry. I very rarely use heat on my hair, only ever using a hairdryer with a diffuser in the coldest winter months. As your hair begins to dry, keep scrunching every now and again, Don't let the products 'set' your hair. They're there to control it, not completely restrict it. I scrunch and also fluff up my roots from underneath to give a bit of volume.
Curl galore!
If you're interested in the TIGI products, you can get them from Cheap Smells or Amazon for fairly cheap. Which reminds me I need to repurchase some before I leave for Spain.
I hope this helped!

Product Review: BiOrganics Salon Secrets

BiOrganics Replenishing Shampoo.Replenishing Treatment. Hair Perfecting Oil.

It was after a #bbloggers chat on Twitter a few weeks ago that I spied a tweet from BiOrganics asking if any bloggers would be interested in reviewing some of their products. Having already dabbled into sulfate free shampoo's, I jumped at the chance. BiOrganics are, as the name suggests, an all organic haircare brand that believes in no animal cruelty, is vegan and vegetarian. Their shampoo's are free from Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), parabens and artificial colours or perfumes, making it a good product for people with sensitive skin- they have no unnecessary or harmful chemicals.

These are the products I was sent- the shampoo, the treatment and the hair oil, all of which contain argan oil, wheat proteins, lavender oil and ylang ylang. When I first started using it, the most immediate thing I noticed was the smell. It's quite a strong smell from the lavender and ylang ylang that together resemble the smell of those really strong medicated shampoo's. It's not unpleasant, but it might not be to everyone's taste.
The shampoo was as I expected. It cleaned my hair basically. The product claims to tame frizz but I have curly hair and live by the sea where it is both windy and humid in the summer so it's hard to tell whether it lives up to those claims. The treatment is essentially a conditioner and it does its job well as I leave it on to soak in while I get on with the rest of my shower. I like the fact that it comes in a pump bottle so you get just the right amount and a little goes a long way.
I couldn't help but compare the Elixir with the hair oil I usually which is L'Oreal's Mythic Oil. This oil feels much thicker and stickier in comparison but none of it transfers once the hair is dry and my ends feel nice and nourished. Another useful point is that the oil will help against heat so you can use it before straighteners or curlers on dry hair.
All three bottles retail for £35 making it quite pricey but I really appreciate the lengths they have gone to ensure their product is ethical and as natural as it can be. As I mentioned before, a little goes a long way so you can really stretch their worth out. There aren't many stockists but all of their products are available online.

Hope you found this review useful
Do you use any organic hair care products?

Product Review: John Frieda Haircare

John Frieda luxurious volume
john frieda frizz ease smooth start luxurious volume

I was recently contacted by a company working on behalf of John Frieda, asking if I would like to review some products. Naturally, I said yes, specifying that I had fine but curly hair and waited to see what would be sent my way. There was a bit of a delay because I had it sent to my home address and then obviously, I was in Barcelona for a while as well but when I got home, this is what awaited me. I was sent full size tubes of the Frizz-Ease Smooth Start Shampoo and Conditioner, Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow Out Spray and a small sample of Luxurious Volume Blow Dry Lotion, which was all very generous of them.

I'll start with the shampoo and conditioner. I first used after coming back from Barcelona and having spent the weekend in bed recovering, so my hair was in need of some serious TLC. They both smell nice, not of a scent in particular I would say, just a standard shampoo smell. The conditioner worked miracles in getting all the tangles out and after, I can say my hair felt really nice and smooth and clean. Unfortunately, that's all I can say for them. I used it a few times and I noticed my hair was looking a bit lacklustre... I had used it combined with all my normal styling products but my hair just seemed to be looking a bit limp and wasn't curling up as much as it usually does. My mum, who also has curly hair, also noticed the same thing so I think this range of shampoo and conditioner is best suited to those who already have straight hair and want to help tame any frizzy fly aways.

The blow dry products, I was dubious about from the start as I've never had much luck with these type of products and I tend not to use the hairdryer on my hair anyway. The Blow Dry Lotion didn't really do much for my hair or rather I didn't see a noticeable difference apart from it being a bit sticky on my hair but the one I was really impressed with was the Blow Out Spray! I applied it to my roots after all my usual styling products and then blow dried my hair with a diffuser and it looked so good! My hair needs a bit of a trim as the longer layer of my hair is getting a bit too long and normally doesn't curl up as well but with all these products working together my hair was really full and bouncy. I'm certainly impressed and this is the stand out product out of the four I was sent and I will continue to use it.

I think the shampoo was a hard one for me to review personally as I think I've become a sulfate-free shampoo convert since using the Organix Coconut range and John Frieda shampoos, like most big brands, include sulfates. However, I do like the Blow Out Spray and will be using this in my styling regime.

If you would like to know more about the range, you can check out the John Frieda website or alternatively, John Frieda's YouTube page which has loads of hair tutorials and demonstrations of the products in use.

I hope you like this review
Have you had any experience with these products?

Product Review: Organix Coconut Milk Review

I've always toyed with the idea of purchasing sulphate free shampoo- a product I thought was much more common in the States and promoted by a lot of women with afro-carribean hair. I certainly wasn't expecting to see it in the supermarkets around in the UK. However, I was browsing round Boots the other day- actually looking for the L'Oreal sulfate free range when I noticed this brand was on offer and on further inspection with the ingredients, discovered it was sulphate free. Sulphate based chemicals are used in most shampoo's you get in the shops- they're the chemical that helps it foam and clean your hair  but also in the process, strips hair of its natural oils. With curly hair, I'm always looking for ways to keep my hair as healthy as possible so I popped these straight away into my basket.

I have to admit the biggest appeal to me was the coconut element of it- I LOVE the smell of coconut and the shampoo lives up to it. Such a divine smell. As you can see as well, it contains egg proteins which is great for your hair. So how does it hold up in the shower? Well, the first thing I noticed straight away with both the shampoo and the conditioner is that they were really thick compared to a standard shampoo, the conditioner even more so. The shampoo had no problem foaming up and my hair felt reeally really clean after, which makes you think why they bother adding them in the first place? I feel like this shampoo really helped get rid of any build up I might have had on my hair. I have heard some people have problems with it drying their hair out but I have very fine, thin curly hair and didn't have any problem with it. And the conditioner is fantastic in reducing frizz and tangles. As always, I leave it on for as long as I can while I get on with the rest of my shower. Once it's dried, my hair felt really nice and soft.
After a few weeks, one of the biggest differences I noticed was how much less hair was falling out in the shower. When I wash my hair, that's really the time I work all the tangles and knots out and I don't brush my hair dry, so before, I'd always get a fair clump of hair in my hand after. After using this for a while, there was barely any fall out! I couldn't believe it. And when you've got fine hair, every strand counts!

My only niggle with the product was with the packaging. I haven't exactly got the strongest hands or upper body strength, but after two uses, I was really struggling to squeeze the conditioner out. It may well be a two hand job and because it has a rounded top, you can't sit it upside on the side of your bath. Just a bit irritating.

As I said, I only bought these because I saw they were on offer and out of curiousity. At £6 normal retail price, they're nearly double the price of a standard price of Herbal Essence for example and are a bit harder to get hold of. I'm really impressed with this product and I think I'm becoming a sulfate-free shampoo convert!

Have you had any experience with any Sulphate Free Shampoos?

DIY Coconut Oil and Honey Hair Mask

Yes, I know I said I wouldn't be around too much because of exams, but it's precisely for that reason that I'm writing this post- essay and revision procrastination in its most simplest form. I decided to give this DIY hair treatment a go after hearing various good things about using coconut oil on your hair. So why not?
Coconut oil is said to be one of the best things you can put on your hair as it really nourish and moisturises it as it helps stop protein loss from your hair so if you're a curly girl like me, this is great! It's also said to be great at combating scalp issues such as dandruff. I got mine from an Indian shop near to where I live but you can also order it online from place like Amazon. If you can try and get extra virgin, unrefined coconut oil as it will be in its purest form and therefore, easier for your hair to absorb.
Honey is yet another natural ingredient that helps your hair stay healthy and happy. It can also over time, naturally lighten your hair.
The egg is optional, but as everyone knows, eggs are a great source of protein and hair is essentially just one long strand of protein so a little extra can't hurt. And in case you're wondering, it won't make your hair smell like eggs. That would only happen if its gone off. It also helps tie all the ingredients together but it's not essential.

Here's what you'll need:
Coconut Oil
Honey
Egg (Optional)
Microwaveable Bowl
Towel
Shower cap/ clingfilm/ plastic bag

1. Take your coconut oil and put the desired amount into a microwaveable bowl. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature
2. Melt it in the microwave for about 50 seconds and then stir the rest until it's completely melted. Be careful as we don't want the oil to be too hot- it should be warm to touch
3. Add the honey. About 1 tbsp should do it, you don't need too much or else it gets sticky very easily
4. Re warm it in the microwave if necessary so that all the ingredients are liquid and smooth
5. Add the egg (optional)
6. Whisk all the ingredients together.
7. Grab a towel round your shoulders and, working from the tips up, work it into your hair
8. Leave on for 30-40 mins and keep it wrapped up and covered
9. Wash out with a small amount of shampoo

And that's it! It doesn't matter if you don't get all the residue out as a little bit left on overnight, will do no harm and then you can just wash your hair the next morning as normal. Your hair will be left smooth and shiny. Some people recommend this as a regular treatment to combat damaged or dry hair and it's definately something I will be considering to keep my hair healthy as possible.

Let me know if you try it!
Hope you've had a good weekend

Top 12 of 2012

So I thought today of all days would be the perfect time to share with you my Top 12 of 2012. It's a complete mix of things- beauty, clothes, music etc etc but these are really things that I could not have lived without throughout 2012.
In no particular order

L'Oreal Mythic Oil
I've had this for quite a while now actually but it's still something I couldn't live without. I use it religiously every time I wash my hair and it's great for curly hair like mine. It also helps keep it healthy and happy and I'm proud to say my hair is in great condition.

Real Techniques Eye Brushes
A fairly recent purchase and something I never quite got round to photographing for my blog. I love these brushes and they're great quality. Now I've started branching out a bit in regards to eye make up, I feel I can properly follow all those lovely tutorials you see on Youtube

MAC Fanfare Lipstick
I bought this a while ago and haven't stopped wearing  it since. It goes great with my skin tone and isn't too much of a bright pink so it can be worn day or night. A very flattering and versatile lipstick.

ASOS Leather Jacket
This jacket has done me proud. I basically live in it.
It's warm, well made and a bargain at £100 for real leather

MAC Ricepaper Eyeshadow
My first MAC eyeshadow and the one that set me off on a quest to complete a 15x palette... I'm 2/3 of the way there now. A gorgeous pale gold that works great as a base and lightens up the eye area.
Great if you're a glasses wearer like me

Body Shop Seaweed Range
Throughout this year, I've been working my way through quite a few new skin care brands and while usually initially impressed with them, so many of them ended up drying out my skin. Enter The Body Shop. A great range and perfect for combination/oily skin. This range has not dried me out, is gentle on the skin and gets stubborn eye makeup off

Converse
Again, quite a recent purchase but again something that I have lived in. Apart from when it's really raining, cuz they're not so great for that... Very comfortable and makes an outfit look instantly a combination of casual and cool

Urban Outfitters Graphic Tee's
I've always loved UO t-shirts. They're great for when I need to chuck something on for uni with a pair of jeans but at their full price, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. But when they're in the sale and/or there are student discounts going around, I jump at the chance.

Ben Howard
2012 was the year I discovered and fell in love with Ben Howard and his music. I first came across him when he did an eerily good rendition of Call Me Maybe. Since then, I've hunted down as much of his music as I can but my favourite would still have to be Keep Your Head Up
Vera Wang Princess Night Perfume
My boyfriend bought me this perfume after months of hinting on his way back from a holiday in the summer. It's a very sweet fragrance- perhaps not to everyone's liking- but I love it and recommend everyone to go give it a whiff if they have the chance

Swimming
Bit off an odd one but 2012 was the year I started to swim. I've never been a particularly good swimmer having nearly drowned when I was very young. I started going with my sister in the summer and have kept it up since. It's great exercise, has really helped my asthma and my confidence in the water. I've also taught myself how to do the strokes properly and I plan to keep improving

Origins Night-a-Mins
Jusssst sneaking in to 2012, is this moisturiser. I know I've only had it a week but it's left such an impression on me, I had to include it. It's helped reduce the appearance of blemishes as they fade and has left my skin feeling much healthier and softer in the mornings

And those are my top 12 of 2012!

Let me know if you have anything similar on your blogs- I love seeing what products people have really enjoyed this year. 2012 has been a great year for my blogs- it's grown so much (thank you Twitter...) and I'd like to take the chance to say hello to all my new followers this year and thank you for joining my blog!

I hope you all have a great NYE and I'll see you all in 2013
Onwards and upwards!

Product Review- Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Foam

Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Foam Hairdye

New hair. I decided on a whim to dye my hair black. I had done it before and fancied a change so when I saw Garnier Nutrissed on offer- around £4- in Boots, I though why not. I know that it might not look that much difference in photo, but in real life there is a subtle difference which I like. It takes the reddy brwon undertone out of my hair.

I usually tend to go for the cheap hairdyes- in the past I've used Superdrug own brand and Schwarzkopf Live so this is the first Garnier one I had used. I'm always wearing of the strength of the chemicals in hair dye because I have thin hair and they always upset my curls for a day or two. It does come however with the obligatory conditioner. Overall, I did like it. My eyes are really sensitive to ammonia (along with onions and strong wind..) and this one didn't set me off. As I washed it out of my hair, my mum also commented that it smelt really fruity, which is always a plus.

Anyway just a little post
Have any of you used this hair dye?

Purchases And Repurchases

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer
Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer
Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Reviver
Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Reviver

Some recent purchases over the last couple of weeks.
Bobbi Brown Concealer
Body Shop Vit C Skin Reviver
Foxy Curls Contour Creme and Spray
Max Factor 2000 Calories Mascara.

And a few words to say about them. I managed to get the Bobbi Brown Concealer with discount so I was really pleased with that however I wouldn't call it a miracle concealer. By all means, it does a good job but I'm still struggling to find a concealer that properly hide my dark eye circles. I like that it comes with a powder, however, to set it which is slightly yellow tinted.

The skin reviver is my most recent buy. It may have been a bit of a waste of money because I don't really see a difference in my skin after putting it on. It has a pinky opalescent shimmer when you look at in the light and it makes my skin feel very silky smooth and soft but I wouldn't say it doesn't do anything further than that. The amazing orange smell- one of my favourite smells- is lovely.

Foxy Curls has been a staple in my hair care for a while, particularly the spray which is a life saver. The Countour Creme is new though. I do like it, and, in keeping with the other products in this range smells amazing like Skittles. You only need to use a small amount on wet hair because its quite sticky other wise and you'd get a lot of the dreaded crunch. Because you only need a little, it probably be worth the money because it will last quite a while. Fingers crossed.

Repurchase of the 2000 Calories Mascara that used to be one of my favourite mascaras and is in contention for the top spot against Revlon Grow Luscious. The formulas are quite different but the one thing I prefer about this is that it has a much smaller brush so it's better for delicate corners or the bottom lid.

So I just thought I'd share these with you.
Quería compartir estas compras con ustedes.
Have you tried any of these?
Has probado uno de ellas?
Have a good weekend!
Que tengas un buen fin de semana!

All About: My Curly Hair

As promised, here is my post on my curly hair. I've already done a post on my hair but I really wanted to do a more updated and more detailed one. This post will be including many photos of when I was younger so be nice :P
I hope this post will be useful to anyone with curly hair because let's face it, curly hair is a fickle mistress and she needs a lot of attention.

Anyway, let's get started.

My Hair Story

Okay so when I was younger, I didn't actually have very curly hair, it was more wavy. But when I hit my teens, my hair was became very curly, mainly due to the fact it was very long.

Me aged 8

 Me aged 14

Look at the frizz on that. Shudderful. This was the worst I would say my hair had been. I didn't know how to care or manage my curls and I had a *very* unflattering hair cut. I HATE this picture but it's very useful in understanding how my hair works when it's long.
Eventually with my hair, there is a point where my hair just won't grow any longer, about the length in the picture above. Instead my curls get tighter. I am one of the few people that get natural ringlets. Full on proper corkscrew ringlets that you can slid a pencil up...
This make the hair incredibly heavy so if you have this sort of hair, pay attention to the weight of your hair because if not, it will weigh it down into a very unflattering shape. Even now, with short hair, I always ask my hairdresser to take the weight out of my hair. I don't know how but he manages to thin it down and take the bulk out of it.

I'm very fortunate in that I've been going to the same hair dresser for years, ever since I was a kid and that is so so important that your hairdresser understands your curls. There are lots of types of curly hair and they all work in their own way.

When I was 15, I cut all my hair off to the length it is now and layers became very important. I essentially have two layers in my hair and the upkeep of them is very important in maintaining the style.

Pink arrow are highlighting where my top layer ends. What happens when my hair gets too long in this style, is the blue arrows- the top layer gets too heavy, begins to droop and the style loses its shape.
What we want for this style, is the green arrows- that there is a natural graduation of the hair, so that it doesn't look too choppy and the hair is still bouncy and full of life.

I noticed these two curls in my hair the other day and thought I would show you  how my hair curls. This curl will naturally progress into a ringlet the longer it gets. My hair is a mix of this curl, tight ringlets often at the bottom and slightly wavier, more relaxed hair on the top layers.

So I cut all my hair off and that was that but the truth was that I still didn't fully now how to care for my hair- it was still fairly frizzy and I didn't use any product on it.
So here's the second part of my post..

Haircare

My hair is constantly a birds nest in the morning. I am a fidgety sleeper and my hair pays the price so I often end up washing my hair everyday or every other day. However, I do not wash my hair with shampoo everyday. There is no need. The important thing is to moisturise. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Curly hair is naturally dryer and more fragile than normal hair so it needs more nourishment than usual.
Even if I am not shampooing my hair, I will always run a small amount of conditioner through my hair. I'm not fussy on the brands but instead, let the conditioner sit in your hair for a few minutes. Get on with something else in the shower and then wash it out.

These are the current hair care products that I use.
Left to right: Boot's own brand Curly Hair Mousse, BedHead Foxy Curls Hi-Def Curl Spray, L'Oreal Mythic Oil and John Frieda Frizz-Ease Dream Curls Styling Spray.

After the shower, I will comb my hair through with a wide tooth comb. Never brush your hair when it's dry, especially with something like a paddle brush. It will just damage and break your hair.
The first thing I do is run a small pump of the Mythic Oil through my hair when it is wet. This is the extra nourishment curly hair needs. It does not make your hair look oily, I promise you. It just leaves your hair very very soft and nourished so it looks less frizzy.
Again, when it is still wet, I will use the Boot's Mousse. This has been an absolute staple in my hair care for years now. It is dirt cheap and does a fantastic job at bringing the curls together. I could not live without this. A small amount goes a long way. Work it into the hair and scrunch away. This will give you the definition in your curls.
If you want more definition, use the Foxy Curls Spray. This is a new purchase for me and I'm still experimenting with this. Apply when wet. I find if it's applied on dry hair, it can be a bit crunchy but nothing that doesn't brush out. So far with this product, so good. It works really well on my hair and I can not stress how divine it smells. It's like kids sweets and dolly mix. So so nice.
I use the John Freida when I'm in a lazy mood and don't want to wash my hair. Instead, I will wet it down- either with a spray bottle or my hands and apply a few spritz of this. It just wakes up the curls as it dries and again, this has been a staple for me, for a long time. Foxy Curls also works in the same way.
Another tip I use, is that tying up hair usually has a relaxing effect on my hair. I tie it up very tightly for half an hour, let it down and rearrange them a bit with my fingers and some spray. After this, my curls are a lot less tight.

I very very very rarely use heat on my hair. I do have a hairdryer and I always use a diffuser. Unless, I am in a real real hurry to be somewhere, I will not use it. I'd rather go out with slightly damp hair and let it air dry. No matter what I try, I still find it goes frizzy. If you have any tips, please tell me!

And I think that it everything...
Desperately trying to think if I have left anything out.
I'm currently in the process of growing my hair out. I've had enough of short hair but unfortunately, my hair grows very slowly and needs a lot of upkeep to keep the layers in check. Again, any tips are welcome!

So if you have any questions at all, please please ask me and I will get back to you.
I hope this has been useful!
