All About: My Curly Hair

As promised, here is my post on my curly hair. I've already done a post on my hair but I really wanted to do a more updated and more detailed one. This post will be including many photos of when I was younger so be nice :P
I hope this post will be useful to anyone with curly hair because let's face it, curly hair is a fickle mistress and she needs a lot of attention.

Anyway, let's get started.

My Hair Story

Okay so when I was younger, I didn't actually have very curly hair, it was more wavy. But when I hit my teens, my hair was became very curly, mainly due to the fact it was very long.

Me aged 8

 Me aged 14

Look at the frizz on that. Shudderful. This was the worst I would say my hair had been. I didn't know how to care or manage my curls and I had a *very* unflattering hair cut. I HATE this picture but it's very useful in understanding how my hair works when it's long.
Eventually with my hair, there is a point where my hair just won't grow any longer, about the length in the picture above. Instead my curls get tighter. I am one of the few people that get natural ringlets. Full on proper corkscrew ringlets that you can slid a pencil up...
This make the hair incredibly heavy so if you have this sort of hair, pay attention to the weight of your hair because if not, it will weigh it down into a very unflattering shape. Even now, with short hair, I always ask my hairdresser to take the weight out of my hair. I don't know how but he manages to thin it down and take the bulk out of it.

I'm very fortunate in that I've been going to the same hair dresser for years, ever since I was a kid and that is so so important that your hairdresser understands your curls. There are lots of types of curly hair and they all work in their own way.

When I was 15, I cut all my hair off to the length it is now and layers became very important. I essentially have two layers in my hair and the upkeep of them is very important in maintaining the style.

Pink arrow are highlighting where my top layer ends. What happens when my hair gets too long in this style, is the blue arrows- the top layer gets too heavy, begins to droop and the style loses its shape.
What we want for this style, is the green arrows- that there is a natural graduation of the hair, so that it doesn't look too choppy and the hair is still bouncy and full of life.

I noticed these two curls in my hair the other day and thought I would show you  how my hair curls. This curl will naturally progress into a ringlet the longer it gets. My hair is a mix of this curl, tight ringlets often at the bottom and slightly wavier, more relaxed hair on the top layers.

So I cut all my hair off and that was that but the truth was that I still didn't fully now how to care for my hair- it was still fairly frizzy and I didn't use any product on it.
So here's the second part of my post..

My hair is constantly a birds nest in the morning. I am a fidgety sleeper and my hair pays the price so I often end up washing my hair everyday or every other day. However, I do not wash my hair with shampoo everyday. There is no need. The important thing is to moisturise. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Curly hair is naturally dryer and more fragile than normal hair so it needs more nourishment than usual.
Even if I am not shampooing my hair, I will always run a small amount of conditioner through my hair. I'm not fussy on the brands but instead, let the conditioner sit in your hair for a few minutes. Get on with something else in the shower and then wash it out.

These are the current hair care products that I use.
Left to right: Boot's own brand Curly Hair Mousse, BedHead Foxy Curls Hi-Def Curl Spray, L'Oreal Mythic Oil and John Frieda Frizz-Ease Dream Curls Styling Spray.

After the shower, I will comb my hair through with a wide tooth comb. Never brush your hair when it's dry, especially with something like a paddle brush. It will just damage and break your hair.
The first thing I do is run a small pump of the Mythic Oil through my hair when it is wet. This is the extra nourishment curly hair needs. It does not make your hair look oily, I promise you. It just leaves your hair very very soft and nourished so it looks less frizzy.
Again, when it is still wet, I will use the Boot's Mousse. This has been an absolute staple in my hair care for years now. It is dirt cheap and does a fantastic job at bringing the curls together. I could not live without this. A small amount goes a long way. Work it into the hair and scrunch away. This will give you the definition in your curls.
If you want more definition, use the Foxy Curls Spray. This is a new purchase for me and I'm still experimenting with this. Apply when wet. I find if it's applied on dry hair, it can be a bit crunchy but nothing that doesn't brush out. So far with this product, so good. It works really well on my hair and I can not stress how divine it smells. It's like kids sweets and dolly mix. So so nice.
I use the John Freida when I'm in a lazy mood and don't want to wash my hair. Instead, I will wet it down- either with a spray bottle or my hands and apply a few spritz of this. It just wakes up the curls as it dries and again, this has been a staple for me, for a long time. Foxy Curls also works in the same way.
Another tip I use, is that tying up hair usually has a relaxing effect on my hair. I tie it up very tightly for half an hour, let it down and rearrange them a bit with my fingers and some spray. After this, my curls are a lot less tight.

I very very very rarely use heat on my hair. I do have a hairdryer and I always use a diffuser. Unless, I am in a real real hurry to be somewhere, I will not use it. I'd rather go out with slightly damp hair and let it air dry. No matter what I try, I still find it goes frizzy. If you have any tips, please tell me!

And I think that it everything...
Desperately trying to think if I have left anything out.
I'm currently in the process of growing my hair out. I've had enough of short hair but unfortunately, my hair grows very slowly and needs a lot of upkeep to keep the layers in check. Again, any tips are welcome!

So if you have any questions at all, please please ask me and I will get back to you.
I hope this has been useful!

Tickled Pink- OOTD

Blazer- H&M
Shirt- Primark
Jeans- Cheap Monday via ASOS
Boots- Topshop
Bag- My mum's from when she was little :3

Proudly featuring some of my newly purchased items. I ventured out today which I rarely do at the weekend I have to admit and even though it was just to the library, because of all the lovely things I had bought, I decided to dress up a little bit. It also gave me a good chance to test run my new Topshop boots on a small outing

I love the bright raspberry colour of the blazer and I've finally given my mum's bag an outing. It definately needs a polish though and smells a bit funky... Ah well, it's just for books!

H'anyways, I've got another Spanish essay with my name on so I shall have to see you soon
Have a good weekend guys!

Hello You Beauties- Topshop Andre Wedge Boots

Hello you beauties indeed.
So my Christmas paycheck rolled in yesterday and I immediately went on a massive and long over due splurge and these were the real deal breaker. I have been lustfully eyeing these boots for months, trying them on and agonising with myself every time I went into Topshop.

Low and behold, yesterday Topshop had 20% off for students which meant instead of £68, these babies were £54! Bargain! I walked away from them once and then ultimately gave up, went back and bought them.
And I'm so glad I did. They are *divine*. The suede is a gorgeous very very dark navy in the right light and they are soooo comfy and easy to wear!
The only problem is the heel is around 4 inches. I'm already 5"8 and these on, that easily takes me up to 6"... But I do not care. I'd rather be tall!

Another thing is the sizing is a wee bit off. I'm a size 7, sometimes a 6 in heels. These are a big size 7, I at least have a centimetre of space at the end of my toe so just be aware of that. But I suppose that means wiggle room for thick socks or gel pads. I also love the style of them in that they lace up past the ankle. A lot of the problems that I have with heels is that my feet are very thin and so unless I have something to literally strap my feet in place, or they very tight court shoes, as soon as I start walking, my feet pop out of them and it's a nightmare.
But not these. God I love these shoes.

I won't be doing a haul post but instead, will be featuring the clothes in my OOTD's over the coming week. I'm also waiting on a delivery of hair products which I want to review before I do my big hair post so bare with me!

Anyway, hope you have a good weekend!

Things I Love- Graphic Tee's

Top row, l-r) River Island, Topshop, Topshop
Bottom row, l-r) Miss Selfridge, Urban Outfitters, Urban Outfitters

I abolutely love graphic tee's especially one that have a grungy or vintage feel to them. I already own the middle Topshop vest. Luckily for me, there are absolutely tons of these around at the moment and these are only a few I've come across whilst cruising through online shops- I recently snapped up a very nice one from New Look.
Unfortunately for me, being in the big boobed department does not help. Many of these tops are high necked and/or baggy material, which, if you have big boobs will make you look like a sack. Your best bet is to find one in a tight or stretchy material so that if it has to be a high neck one, it will be form fitting and you can show off your figure.

These are really turning into a wardrobe staple for me as I can literally wear them with anything and I feel these may be the way forward for me when it gets to summer.
Hopefully, they'll be around to stay.

What do you think of these t shirts?
Have you spied any gooduns anywhere?

Thank You So Much River Island Sale- My New Baby

Thank you so so much River Island sale.
I have been lusting after this bag for so long and have resisted, but what do I spy right at the bottom of a sale rack? This baby just sitting there, with £20 knocked off it. WIN. Even luckier was the fact that the other two were broken and this was the only one in tact.

I don't mind that it's missing a few of the studs and I'm going to punch a hole in strap as it's a little too long for my liking. Unfortunately, it's too small to fit my uni work into it but I'll damn well find a way

Easily my best sale find so far

FOTD and New Year Resolutions

A Happy New Year to you all :)
Today, I actually managed to get myself out of pyjamas today and make myself presentable. We are going out as a family tonight as it is my Dad's birthday- there's a steak calling me :D So I thought I would make an effort

With and without flash.
My Blackberry contract *finally* runs out in about 2 months time so I'm looking into getting a new phone with a decent camera and already have my eyes on a Samsung Xperia on T Mobile. I've been with Orange for years now and I've finally had enough-just way too expensive now. Definitely something I'm looking forward to in the new year, my Blackberry has been driving me round the bend!
*mobile rant over*

I liked this look as it is a wearable warm smoky eye done with bronzes and shimmery pale golds, mainly done with the Sleek Storm Palette. My eyes are quite round though and I think my eyes look huuuge in the first photo O_o, don't you?

 Revlon PhotoReady Foundation
MAC Select Sheer Pressed Powder
Collection 2000 concealer

Topshop Lipstick in Rumour Has It
Topshop Glaze in Antique

So, every year these are made and I never keep them.
I have self disciple as strong as a jellyfish's arm...
But this year, I've only given myself a few that I can actually stick to.

1) Walk more-
Stop using my car so much when I'm at home and stop getting the bus back  to halls when I'm at uni. I do actually really enjoy walking, especially if I have my iPod on me. Laziness just gets the better of me the majority of the time.

2) Wear jeans less
Bit of an odd one but I really want to move away from wearing jeans so much. They're my go to item in the morning when the majority of my clothes would look just as good with a skirt. I will definitely have to be investing in more tights though.

3) Find a skin routine that works for me and damn well stick to it
I've always struggled with my skin. It's not terrible but it could be a whole lot better and I have a lot to answer for. People often say my skin is fine, to which I reply I've had plenty years practice hiding it. Either way, the Liz Earle is shaping up to be a winner so I might be on track with this one already!

And there we have it. I have a niggling feeling there was one more but if I've forgotten it already, it can't have been that important...
What are your New Year's resolutions?

Top 11 Of 2011

Happy New Year guys!
I hope you all had a fun time last night, whatever you were doing. It is unfortunately lashing it down with rain where I am at the moment and as such I haven't made it out of my pyjamas today. So, as a way to kill time and avoid Spanish and Portuguese revision, I thought I would do my Top 11 of 2011

Lis Earle Cleanse and Polish Skin Duo

This is something that I got for Christmas so it's really only managed to sneak into my top 2011 products. But, I've been using it ever since and am already in love with it. I already feel like its doing my skin good and it leaves your skin feeling so so soft. The only criticism I have is that it has quite a strong rose water smell and I *really* don't like artificial rose smells. But that's just me.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation

If you've read my review of this foundation, you will know how much I rave about this foundation. If you haven't, you can read it here because really all the information is there.
But this absolutely my holy grail foundation and I'm so glad I bought it

Ecotools Powder Brush

I use this brush to do both my foundation and my powder and it is a *big* step up from the shoddy e.l.f. Kabuki brush I was using. It is wonderfully soft and really blend my foundation in beautifully.

Sleek Storm Palette

The perfect mix of nudes and gold combined with warm darker shades make this the ideal eyeshadow palette for me and I use it nearly everyday. It was something my makeup collection was severely lacking

Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara

Again, I have a review of this mascara and so far, it is my perfect mascara that just lengthens and volumises my short lil eyelashes. In my review, I hadn't quite decided if it had bumped Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara off the the top spot and I can say now that it has.

MAC Springsheen Blush

A beautiful corally pink with shimmery gold undertones. It is very similar to the other MAC blush that I have- Fleur Power- but it far more wearable. Both are very pigmented so you definitely need a light hand with it.

Saving the best till last. I am a big lipstick girl and these are my new loves

MAC Chatterbox Lipstick

Quite a bright pink lipstick but I'm never one to shy away from the brighter colours. I absolutely adore this colour on me and actually find it surprisingly wearable so much so that it has become my go-to lipstick

MAC Ruby Woo Lipstick

The ultimate red lipstick.
As long as you moisturise your lips before as this is a very dry formula. But if you do that, you're set for the whole day. Absolutely brilliant red lipstick

Rimmel Heartbreaker Lipstick

My all time favourite lipstick and the only lipstick I have completely worn down. It can be worn both day and night and is often the shade worn by Zooey Deschanel in the Rimmel adverts. A gorgeous colour.

Topshop Glaze in Antique

A gorgeous muted peachy pink lipgloss. A bit on the sticky side but it's perfect on its own and  to tone down a bright lipstick in the day as it isn't too pigmented

I use it everyday without fail to keep my hair in check and it has never let me down. It leaves no crispiness in my hair and keeps my hair frizz free. As it is dirt cheap as well, it's pretty student purse friendly

And there you have it, my top 11 of 2011.
I have a big hair post planned as I'm stuck in hair limbo at the moment, not really sure what to do with it and it got me thinking about curly hair in general so I figured it would be useful to put on here. So keep an eye out for that, if you are interested.

Hope you're having a good day
And what have been some of your top products of 2011? - I'd love to know.
